He walked inside. Elara was at the counter, inventorying bags of soil. She looked up. Her hair was shorter. There were new lines around her eyes. She didn’t smile.

“The bridge hold up?” she asked.

He wanted to argue. To explain that his silence was protection, not absence. But the words stuck. Instead, he said the worst possible thing: “You wouldn’t understand. This project is everything.”

“Excuse me,” he said.

For weeks, their relationship existed in the margins of his lunch breaks. He’d bring coffee. She’d teach him how to talk to his plants (“Whisper, Leo. They hate condescension.”). He’d fix her wobbly shelving. She’d draw tiny, furious faces on the nursery pots of plants that weren’t selling.

They sat on the kitchen floor in their pajamas, watching the spider plant’s tiny white flowers unfurl under the moonlight. It was absurd. It was perfect.
