What is Ente Paavam Chechi ? Ente Paavam Chechi (English: "My Poor Elder Sister") is a highly popular and emotionally resonant Malayalam short story written by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (1908–1994), one of the most beloved and iconic figures in Malayalam literature. First published in 1952 as part of his anthology Vishappu (Hunger), this story has since become a classic, frequently included in school curricula and adapted for other media.

If you are a student or a lover of world literature, seek out a legal copy—it is a small investment for a story that will stay with you for a lifetime.

The story remains under copyright protection. Vaikom Muhammad Basheer passed away in 1994, so his works will enter the public domain in India 60 years after his death (i.e., 2054). Until then, copyright is held by his legal heirs and publishers (such as DC Books, Poorna Publications, and Sahitya Pravarthaka Co-operative Society).

The narrative is a poignant, semi-autobiographical account of Basheer’s relationship with his elder sister, Aisha (affectionately called "Chechi"). It is told from the perspective of a younger brother who has returned home after a long, difficult period of political activism, imprisonment, and wandering. The story unfolds in the author’s childhood home in Thalayolaparambu, Kerala. The narrator—a thinly disguised Basheer himself—has come back home as a wanderer, penniless and in poor health. His elder sister, who has been through her own share of hardships (including an unhappy marriage and widowhood), takes him in without a word of judgment.
