Download Mach 4 〈Extended〉

Leo had already been running for six.

He sat back down, exhausted. "You can kill me. You can burn this place. But the seed is planted."

The download was complete.

The file was called The Garden . It was a terraforming schematic, the last hope for a planet that had choked on its own smog. Hidden in a dead satellite, forgotten by the corporations who had started the war, it was a second chance. But it was huge. 800 petabytes. At Mach 4, it would take eleven hours. download mach 4

"Last chance," Voss said.

"Fifty-one percent," the terminal chirped.

"Eighty percent."

A second blast. The bottom hinge tore free. The door leaned inward, held only by a single deadbolt of rusted iron.

Leo leaned his head against the cool metal of the dead terminal. The wind outside carried no sound but its own sorrow. Somewhere, out there, a farmer with a cracked earpiece was hearing the plans for a new world.

Leo could see her now through the gap. Captain Voss. His old partner. She looked older than he remembered, her face a map of regret and desperation. "Don't make me come in there, Leo. That data belongs to the Collective. You're a thief." Leo had already been running for six

Leo stared at the progress bar on his antique terminal. The theoretical limit of the old copper lines. No one had pushed data this fast in twenty years, not since the Quiet War fried the orbital relays and sent civilization back to the stone age of dial-up.

Leo smiled. "You're too late."

The first shotgun blast buckled the door's top hinge. Dust rained from the ceiling. Leo's screen wobbled on its stand. You can burn this place

The progress bar flickered.
