Alive 1 -
We spend our lives trying to upgrade the operating system. We chase “Alive 2” – a state of happiness, of purpose, of wealth, of enlightenment. We see the simple fact of our breathing as a baseline, a problem to be solved. But there are moments—floating in cold water, standing beneath a star-destroyed sky, holding a hand in the dark—when the complexity falls away. In those moments, we stop striving for “Alive 2.” We simply acknowledge the raw data.
But herein lies the miracle. That same single digit of existence is also the prerequisite for joy. You cannot feel the sun on your skin without that “1.” You cannot taste salt on the wind, hear a child’s laugh, or feel the weight of a sleeping cat on your chest. The binary state is the canvas. The sorrows and the ecstasies are the paint. alive 1
That simple, irreducible “1” is not the beginning of the journey. It is the journey. Everything else is just commentary. We spend our lives trying to upgrade the operating system
To be “Alive 0” is the peace of the stone, the silence of the extinct. But to be “Alive 1” is to be caught in the brutal, beautiful middle ground. It is the code that contains the capacity for suffering. The “1” allows for the 2 AM anxiety, the sting of rejection, the ache of a tired body. It is the permission slip for pain. But there are moments—floating in cold water, standing
In the binary language of computers, “1” means on . It means current is flowing, a circuit is closed, and a state of being has been achieved. To be “Alive 1” is to exist in that primal, binary state: the heart beats, the lungs draw air, the neuron fires. It is the raw, unadorned fact of existence. It is the switch flipped to yes .
The heart beats. The lungs draw air. The switch is on.
And yet, to be human is to find that simple “1” terrifyingly insufficient. We are haunted by the fear of being a flat line, a mere biological “on” switch. We look at the long, sterile beep of a hospital heart monitor and feel a profound unease. Is that all it is? A signal? A metabolic loop?
