Opening: Princeton University, 1947. John Nash Jr., a brilliant but socially awkward mathematics graduate student, arrives with a desire to publish his own “original idea.” He struggles with social interactions but finds a unique perspective: he sees patterns and strategies in everyday life, from a pigeon pecking crumbs to a rival’s tie.
Psychiatrist Dr. Rosen diagnoses Nash with paranoid schizophrenia. Nash undergoes painful insulin shock therapy and later takes antipsychotic medication, but the side effects (emotional numbness, erectile dysfunction) and the allure of his hallucinations drive him to stop treatment. After graduating and taking a teaching post at MIT, Nash is approached by a mysterious government agent, William Parcher, who offers him a top-secret job: breaking encrypted Soviet codes hidden in magazines and newspapers. Nash begins secretly delivering decoded results to Parcher.
